Hurricane "Season" Continues

The web site for U.S. News and World Report summarized the effects of hurricane Isabel:

Folks from North Carolina to New York last week battened down the hatches as Hurricane Isabel hit land. The tropical tempest, which reached 100 mph winds in some places, claimed lives, caused flooding, and downed trees and power lines, knocking out electricity to 4 million-plus people. Damage is estimated in the hundreds of millions. (usnews.com, dated 9/20/03)

In May 2003, William Gray and the Colorado State University hurricane forecast team released their hurricane forecast:

The storm seasons spanning 1995-2002 comprised the most active eight consecutive hurricane years on record, and the Colorado State forecasting team believes that we have entered a new multi-decadal cycle of increased hurricane and landfall probability as was witnessed in the 1940s and 1950s.

"Our forecast team believes that we have definitely entered a new era for increased storm activity, particularly an increase in the number of major hurricanes," said Philip Klotzbach, an atmospheric science researcher and member of Gray's forecast team. "Particularly along the East Coast, citizens should be prepared for two or three decades of increased major hurricane activity, which also means increased probability of landfalling hurricanes." (http://tropical.atmos.colostate.edu/forecasts/2003/june2003/press_release.html)

That prediction raises the number of indicators of more bad weather to come to at least two (see the following two paragraphs).

Inspired Commentary

A little thought will confirm that what takes months and years to build can be destroyed in minutes and sometimes instantaneously. The awesome power of the forces of nature should awaken a respectful dependence on the providence of nature's God.

The spirit of antichrist is prevailing in the world to a far greater extent than it has ever prevailed before. The day of test and purification is just upon us. Signs of a most startling character appear, in floods, in hurricanes, in tornadoes, in cloud-bursts, in casualties by land and by sea, that proclaim the approach of the end of all things. The judgments of God are falling on the world, that men may be awakened to the fact that Christ will come speedily. (Advent Review and Sabbath Herald, November 8, 1892)

Tensions Rise Over Ten Commandment Display

Stating reasons for Focus on the Family's support of Judge Moore's determination to keep the Ten Commandment monument in the rotunda of the Alabama Supreme Court building, Don Hodel, president of Focus on the Family, wrote:

But, if we acquiesce this time in this decision [the federal court order to remove the monument], the enemies of our religious foundation will have reached a watershed event: the separation of God and state.

Once that watershed event is achieved, persecution of believers in Christianity becomes inevitable. . . .

It's time to state the case clearly: America was founded on Judeo-Christian values; its Constitution and laws are solidly based on that foundation; and our concepts of fairness and equity are founded on those values. Therefore, America must stop allowing false and mistaken leaders to expunge references to God. In fact, we must retake the high ground and insist that America restore its foundation. . . .

This is why we believe the battle must be joined whatever the cost. This is why we are asking those who share our belief that the time is now to join with us as never before. (CitizenLink, a web site of Focus on the Family, August 25, 2003)

The action called for includes prayer and political action, but no physical violence.

Inspired Commentary

Speaking of persecution, inspiration predicts that when even some varieties of Christianity obtain political power, persecution will result:

When Protestant churches shall unite with the secular power to sustain a false religion, for opposing which their ancestors endured the fiercest persecution, then will the papal sabbath be enforced by the combined authority of church and state. There will be a national apostasy, which will end only in national ruin. (Evangelism, p. 235)

Homosexual Marriage Trend

The Los Angeles Times reported that on September 19 the governor signed a domestic partners law that expanded gay rights:

SAN FRANCISCO - Gov. Gray Davis on Friday signed a bill that will give domestic partners in California many of the legal rights and obligations of married couples in matters involving children, money and property - a measure that gays and lesbians hailed as a historic step toward equal rights.

The new law, while stopping short of recognizing gay and lesbian marriage, positions California as a national leader in the rights and obligations it affords gays and lesbians, experts said.

"I think we are at our best when we extend rights to every Californian no matter who they are or who they love," Davis said to cheers from a raucous standing-room-only crowd at San Francisco's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual and Transgender center in the Castro District.

"I believe to my core that we are all God's children," the governor continued ("Domestic Partners Law Expands Gay Rights," latimes.com, 9/20/2003).

"This is homosexual marriage lite," said one Sacramento Democrat insider who opposed the measure approved by the Democrat-controlled Legislature ("California legislators pass 'homosexual marriage lite.'" (WorldNetDaily, 9/3/03)

Inspired Commentary

As we noted last month, God has made clear in Romans 1:25-27 how He feels about homosexuality. Promoters of homosexual lifestyles apparently deny that the nature of homosexuality is as the Bible has described it. This denial constitutes a sign that the evil of this world will shortly be ended.

This know also, that in the last days perilous times shall come. For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy, Without natural affection, trucebreakers, false accusers, incontinent, fierce, despisers of those that are good, Traitors, heady, highminded, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God; Having a form of godliness, but denying the power thereof: from such turn away. (2 Tim. 3:1-5)
